This beautiful piece is a full-sized limited edition color print of Charles Banks Wilson's 1995 painting "Freedom's Warrior". It was commissioned by David W. Hearn, Jr., and is currently on loan to the Clifton Steamboat Museum in Beaumont, Texas. The painting was loaned to the museum to highlight the collection of Mr. Wilson's work, as well as to provide emphasis of the museum's overall theme Heroes: Past, Present, and Future. The painting commemorates the history of Native American involvement in the U.S. armed forces, and their contributions to our country in times of war or peace.
There were so many Native Americans in the 108th Army Infantry division that the unit's motto was in Choctaw: "Tanap nanaiya kia alhtaiyaha, which means "Ready in Peace or War." The painting depicts a Native American soldier in World War II battle dress carrying the United States' flag and is flanked by eight famous Indian chiefs. From left to right: Geronimo (Chiricahua Apache), Tecumseh (Shawnee), Sitting Bull (Teton Sioux), Chief Joseph (Nez Perce), Powhattan (Algonquin), Black Hawk (Sauk), Pontiac (Ottawa), and Osceola (Seminole).
