Lt. Richard 'Dick' Dowling
Lt. Richard William "Dick" Dowling (1838-1867)

Richard William "Dick" Dowling (1838 – 1867) was the victorious commander at the Second Battle of Sabine Pass in the American Civil War. In the battle, Dowling took 44 well trained Confederate soldiers and managed to fight off over 5000 Union soldiers. The final result was that Lt. Dowling took 350 prisoners with no causalities. Believed by many historians to be the most decisive victory in any war to date, Lt. Dowling was considered Houston, Texas's first prominent citizen and hero. Lt. Dowling and his unit were the only Confederate unit to be awarded a medal of honor during the war.

Plaka, Inc. is proud to offer this limited edition one quarter Bronze Statue entitled, "Lt. Richard W. Dowling Battle of Sabine Pass" by Herring Coe. Only 50 of these were cast, and each one is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

This Certificate verifies the authenticity of the limited edition, one-quarter size casting of the statue of Lt. Richard W. Dowling, a southeast Texas Civil War Hero. The Clifton Steamboat Museum has commissioned a limited edition of the statues in conjunction with the same artist, Mr. Herring Coe, who created the original, approximately 7-foot tall, bronze Dowling Monument in 1936 located at Sabine Pass, Texas. This limited edition of the statue, with full assurance of the artist, is the only one of its kind in existence.

The special scale version of the Dick Dowling monument at Sabine Pass was commissioned especially for David W. Hearn, Jr. As an exhibit piece, it is also helpful in illustrating the various steps in the lost-wax casting process, one of Herring Coe's preferred artistic media.

Plaka, Inc., is offering a limited number of 40 statues of the Dick Dowling monument done by Herring Coe. Only 50 were made, all the pieces are numbered, and each comes with a certificate of authenticity. This statue is done in several patinas including gold and gray/green. The statue is a one quarter scale model of the Dick Dowling monument at the Sabine ship channel in Texas. They are approximately 21" in height and about 37 pounds in weight.
